Hydrocarbons: the E
U regulations are increasingly focused on reducing the direct impact refrigerants have on the environment. In response, a new generation of low global warming potential (GWP) gases are now available on the market.
While these solutions are undoubtedly more environmentally friendly, both lowering GWP and limiting emissions, their green credentials cannot be the sole consideration for their use.
This is because the hazards associated with some of these gases can relate to toxicity, explosivity or fl ammability, and as such are signifi cant. But the mitigation of the risk is not the same for each – there are safer options.
A safer choice
Compared to A3 (highly fl ammable) solutions such as propane, Opteon XL20 (R-454C), an A2L (low fl ammability) gas carries much safer fl ammability properties. In fact, it is considerably safer and allows for easier risk mitigation in comparison to A3 refrigerants, as it is much less likely to form fl ammable concentrations in the air.
