Daikin Applied UK (DAPUK) has unveiled a new generation of its water-cooled centrifugal compressor chiller range, which boasts improved energy efficiency thanks to the inclusion of a new type of refrigerant cooled inverter drive.
Available in a wide range of cooling capacities and component combinations, the new B Vintage chillers have been designed to deliver optimal performance at both full and part-loads. They can also operate with a choice of refrigerant including low global warming potential (GWP) R513A and R134a in single or dual compressor models. DAPUK manufactures several types of centrifugal chiller to meet a wide variety of applications, including commercial cooling, district energy systems and manufacturing processes. Its centrifugal compressor has also been designed for simplicity with minimal components to improve durability and reliability. The single compressor version of the B Vintage range (DWSC) provides excellent full and part-load performance. The dual compressor version (DWDC) provides outstanding part-load efficiency as well as system redundancy equivalent to two chillers, but at 35% lower cost than installing two separate chillers. B Vintage chillers can be accurately sized to meet the specific needs of a project thanks to the availability of DAPUK’s ‘right-sizing’ selection programme. The inverter also features flexible control functions that closely match the chiller’s performance to operating conditions. This means the system can deliver the required cooling capacity, but at minimal running speed.

Daikin’s inverter uses light internal components, creating the right balance between cost and performance while also reducing vibration and ensuring the chiller operates in the appropriate gear ratios to provide optimum impeller speed whatever the application. This compares favourably with older direct-drive designs, which could suffer from high levels of vibration and stress on the shaft and motor.

New CSVH3 and CSVW3 compressor models have also been incorporated into the software, and Bitzer has added new refrigerants for the CSH.6 series. A weatherproof enclosure is available from ABB. It allows standard, wall-mounted ABB variable speed drives (VSDs) to operate in outdoor areas while remaining protected from weather conditions. The enclosure avoids the need to purchase more costly VSDs with higher IP ratings. A high IP rating does not mean weatherproof and can be more expensive than VSDs with lower IP ratings. ABB’s weatherproof solution provides a suitable enclosure to ensure that VSDs are adequately protected outdoors, enabling the use of IP55 drives. Apart from the IP rating, other considerations when installing a VSD outdoors include: ambient temperature and sunlight; cold; and airflow. The weatherproof solution can be used with the ABB range of general- purpose drives, HVAC drives, and water industry drives. A range of frame sizes is available to cover VSD variants and power ratings. The backplate is fixed to a wall using the same fixing holes as the drive itself, ensuring a streamlined and easy installation, while still leaving access to the keypad for commissioning. The cover can be removed quickly to carry out drive maintenance.

Airedale International Air Conditioning will unveil the SmartCool XL at the Data Centre World Exhibition in London this week. Airedale’s precision Computer Room Air
Conditioning (CRAC) unit is developed specifically for large colocation and hyperscale data centre applications. The XL edition has a cooling capacity of up to 500kW.
The supersized cooling system, which will be on show at DCW, has been specifically adapted for the show, with see-through panels and LED lighting, giving visitors an exclusive view of the internal features including the optimised coil design, chilled water delivery system and fan enclosure.

A compatible fixed refrigerant leak detection system can now be connected directly to the chiller, linking this monitoring function with the chiller’s control system to speed up customer or contractor notification in the unlikely event of refrigerant loss and enable more timely corrective action to be taken. Carrier can supply and fit compatible refrigerant leak detectors, including all wiring connections between the sensors and the chiller control panel. Use of a fixed refrigerant leak detection system reduces the number of mandatory site visits required for testing the chiller under F-Gas regulations by half.

The new control system offers alarm notification by email and SMS alert for rapid response and facilitates easy connection to building management systems. Performance data stored within the unit’s onboard memory can be analysed via a user-friendly graphical display, which shows trend data over time at the touch of a button.
