drupa 2016 Review

Converter attended this year’s show and spoke exclusively to many of the exhibitors about their experiences of the event and the solutions they were demonstrating. Overall, responses were largely positive with product launches attracting large crowds and many sales leads to follow up on; first time exhibitors also reported of successful, worthwhile trips

timing is perfect for us as an equipment supplier and we look forward to 2020.”

MENDEL RG-SYSTEMS Mendel had a difficult start to this year’s drupa, as the company’s CEO, Dieter Mendel, explained: “Before drupa started I was quite surprised to see a full copy of our MEDESA WEBMASTER die cutter on the stand of DAYUAN, a Chinese company. “With the help of a patent lawyer with high

reputation and the use of legal remedy we lodged an appeal to force the DAYUAN company to cover the machine on the booth and to forbid any further promotion and sales activities. “It was clear that this action caused some

attention. On the other hand, we got from some of our sincere competitors words of encouragement and solidarity.”

ATLAS CONVERTING EQUIPMENT Atlas Converting Equipment presented two daily full production speed demonstrations of its Titan SR800 slitting and rewinding machine. Phil Nichols, the company’s marketing and communication manager, told Converter: “The show was very good for us, we had a full program of pre-arranged meetings and very good footfall of visitors onto the stand after the first hour or so. “2016 is the 40th anniversary of the Atlas brand

(Titan is 51 years old this year) so we believe that we have a great reputation and drupa provides a great opportunity to showcase our equipment and services to many existing and prospective customers that would be difficult to reach without flying around the world to meet them. It is always difficult to justify the expense of attending a major 11-day exhibition but drupa 2016 was a clear success for us.” Nichols also expressed concern about a lower number of visitors this year compared to 2012, alluding that this could be down to Atlas’s location in Hall 12 at the back of the event ground.

“It took an hour or so for people to filter through, but once they did we were very busy for the rest of the day. The first and last days were pretty quiet but these events are about quality not quantity.”

GEW

The company reported: “GEW’s participation at the 2016 drupa exceeded all expectations and concluded on a very positive note. We noted the good turnout of international visitors and are pleased about strong interest in our UV systems, and the reception of our product innovations was enthusiastic. We launched the new multi-point inline UV monitor (on show on the stand fitted to a NUVA2 UV lamphead). “The UV monitor consists of a calibrated sensor that continuously reads and records the UV intensity in a UV curing system. This is vital to avoid the risks and consequences of undercured product reaching the customer. “Overall drupa has once again clearly demonstrated its significance as the major trade show for the printing industry. The four-yearly

CORONA SUPPLIES Stuart Greig, the company’s director, said he felt that numbers were down on previous years. “drupa is a long show; it’s now shorter than it

used to be, but probably one or two days too long, particularly in light of the reduced visitor numbers. There will always be a last day no matter how long the show is, but maybe making it officially a shorter day would be some comfort to the weary exhibitors. “Whilst numbers were down, I felt there was still quality in the people that came. The prospects are encouraging but only time will tell how successful this show will become for us. “We launched a new Corona Power Supply at the show, the CSR+, its very first outing being day one of the show. It was well received, a modern upgrade to a familiar industry workhorse. “Digital print continues its ever-increasing push

into the more established print formats and my guess is that by the next drupa, thankfully in four years not three, the digital print position will be even stronger.”
