Electrical protection technology for railway applications

Making sure the electrics for rail applications are safe and fully protected is very important to keep people safe. Gary Miles, managing director of FDB Electrical talks about the importance of protecting electrical equipment for rail applications and some ways that FDB Electrical ensure full protection

F

DB Electrical have been leaders in electrical earth monitoring and equipment protection for some 40 years with many of their range approved by Network Rail – one such device is the FDB11 RCBO which offers approved Network Rail DC immune protection where protection of AC equipment is required in areas adjacent to powerful DC currents – as in electrified rail environments when the special technology of the FDB11 RCBO panel is typically called for. The fully housed FDB11 unit has developed from close involvement with BR/Network Rail installations and is approved for use on auxiliary equipment, e.g. in coffee shops etc. to protect against induced DC current. The FDB11 RCBO as tested by (BR/Network Rail) is specified for use in DC electrified areas where it retains its protective capabilities for AC equipment. Importantly it

incorporates loss of neutral indication and comes with overload and short circuit protection – features which are likely to be of interest to electrical contractors, design engineers and plant engineers working in and around rail industry installations where induced DC current may cause problems in adjacent AC lines.

The metal housed unit comes in 10 Amps to 32 Amps, 40 Amps to 63 Amps and 80 Amps to 100 Amps formats with the 10-32 Amps specification regarded as a general purpose RCBO of choice – with overload and short circuit protection and like all the FDB11 series it is housed in a surface mounting enclosure complete with knockouts.

The FDB11 may also be used for simple

AC protection in schools and similar institutional establishments where its high levels of quality and reliability are appreciated. It is available for 110V, 230V. (FDB13 380/440V TP&N), 50Hz in 10 Amps to 60 Amps ratings. Rated trip currents of 20mA, 30mA and 100mA may be specified.

in proven panel mounted devices for integration into other equipment, as used on the Monorail Mass-Transit system in Singapore, (which runs extensively around the city - the LRT system) and around the nearby Changi airport (the Skytrain system) where FDB EFU50 DC protection units have been used. These units protect in- station equipment on the DC contactless charging system where it monitors the DC circuit for earth faults and disconnects in the event a fault is detected so as to protect the system from further costly damage and potentially protect personnel from the effects of the fault. The EFU50 is RIA tested (by UK Network Rail) – it is part of the FDB

Optima series of earth fault protection relays (RCD’s) and will detect residual direct current without having to use Hall Effect transducers. It can also be installed to detect when and where an earth fault occurs in a DC wired circuit, thus eliminating costly man hours and down- time in locating system faults. The EFU50 is designed to react to DC

currently only and will reject induced or stray alternating current from 25Hz to 250Hz up to 2 Amps whilst still operating precisely on DC residential current against its preset level. This enables the EFU50 to be used to detect imposed DC current on AC circuits as well as its primary use of DC residual current detection. It is a fully encapsulated device thus

providing excellent temperature stability and high immunity against shock and vibration. For ease of installation it is housed in a single, compact Din rail (or chassis mounted) enclosure with a 28 or 46mm aperture for the load cables to pass through. It has integral test and reset push buttons and LED indication of E/F trip.

The EFU50 is particularly suitable for DC controls, heating elements, traction and general DC bus applications. It is used on earthed systems and can provide trip for alarm or indication of any Earth Fault problems. Trip level preset between 500mA and 2000mA.
