Connectivity for the home: the growing consumer adoption
The connected home represents tremendous opportunity for growth and innovation. he connected home is defined by its streamlined functionality. At the touch of a screen, on our smartphone or tablet, we can now control almost every aspect of our home. Because of advanced sensor and wireless technology, we can receive push notifications from our washing machine that alert us when it’s time to change clothes to the dryer, replace the water filter in our refrigerator, remote start a device or home system from our place of work or car, auto-control security and environmental conditions in the home, monitor appliance health and function, and optimise energy usage at a device level. This degree of connectivity allows us to
turn alerts and events into actionable time and money saving results. Whether it’s a home appliance alerting us to its energy use or our heating and cooling system auto adjusting based upon external weather conditions, smart connectivity in the home allows us to take steps to optimise energy usage. The coordination of device-to-device operation for the “if this then that” scenarios allows for automation of routines and tasks in our homes, which is here now, leading to new levels of convenience for the homeowner.

today, we will see smart applications in the home making operating recommendations to the homeowner to optimise performance or extend device life through maintenance recommendations based upon data being captured while the device is in operation. Just as with our automobiles, none of us like when a system or appliance in our home has a maintenance event. Smart and real time diagnostics of major home systems and appliances can give consumers insight to which component within the system may not operating properly and proactively schedule the maintenance if needed before failure or even right the issue themselves. Manufacturers and service companies can reduce maintenance event truck rolls, have the right part on the truck to solve the issue for the customer on the first visit and gain valuable insight on how their products and the systems within them are performing. This is all enabled by reliable and smart connectivity.

Unfortunately, recalls such as these can have ripple effects throughout the entire connected home ecosystem and spill over into other use cases. It reminds us that every part, no matter how small, plays a big part in the future of the ecosystem and market. While mainstream adoption may still be years away, we know this market is poised for growth.
