A year to remember

o say this has been an interesting year would be something of an understatement. Frankly, if someone wrote the plot of

2016 as a novel, no-one would believe it. In the wake of the last 12 months, 2017 has a lot to live up to – at least in terms of surprises if nothing else. If there are any conclusions to be drawn – from the loss of so many iconic fi gures, to extraordinary headlines both here and abroad – it’s ‘carpe diem’, seize the day and that anything’s possible! The time is now, so why not make 2017 the year you fi nally take back control (where have I heard that before?) and determine your working lifestyle by becoming your own boss? The best place to start is, without doubt, within these pages and by a visit to The British & International Franchise Exhibition, which takes place at London’s Olympia on 20 and 21 January. For details of the event, workshops, business opportunities available and information on the Growing Your Own Business Conference that runs alongside the exhibition, turn to pages 34-39. Also this month we have advice on

turning to franchising after redundancy and how to maintain a good relationship with your franchisor, we turn a spotlight on the health and beauty sector, plus there’s a special feature on women in franchising. On this last subject, it’s good to refl ect that we live in progressive times in which women, while they may not be equally represented, increasingly fi nd roles in male- dominated industries. That’s not to say that that all is now equal between the sexes... The French saying ‘vive le diff erence’ is ostensibly about that between men and women and, to my mind, diff erence is still to be celebrated. As my hero, the late and great Victoria Wood once said: “A man is designed to walk three miles in the rain to phone for help when the car breaks down, and a woman is designed to say, ‘You took your time’ when he comes back dripping wet.”
