however, is the hacktivist. “The man that used to stand outside an AGM with a banner is now much more likely to build a group on social media and launch a cyber attack to express his anger,” says Bonner. “If small hacktivist groups are able to cause disruption, it implies that nation states or organised crime gangs could do the same.” Many of the attacks from hacktivists and


nation states are DDoS (distributed denial-of- service) attacks. With a giant global network of computers, attackers flood a business’s system with false requests, giving legitimate users a slow or unavailable service. “They may also delete systems, alter dates or do anything to attack the availability of systems,” says Bonner. “It is difficult to permanently defend against, because attackers can always recruit more people.”


THE EX FACTOR Many organisations won’t be targeted by organised crime, nation states or hacktivists, but all firms are vulnerable to the gripes of current and ex-employees. “The things people would never dream of doing in the physical world, they

feel comfortable doing in the electronic world,” says Bonner. “Staff feel that the work stored on their laptop is their data. Good salespeople have always tried to take their Rolodex with them when they moved. Now it might be their Outlook folders. The difference with the electronic system is the scale. The impact on a firm tends to be lower but the prevalence is high. The good news is that if a business implements a system that protects them from insiders, that same system does a good job of protecting against external attackers.” A small amount of preparation can make a


huge difference when countering cyber threats. UK banks have seen big reductions in credit card fraud as they have stepped up cyber security, and now other firms are countering cyber threats. “We’ve done a lot of work with the International Information Integrity Institute (I-4 Forum), which brings together firms to share knowledge,” says Bonner. “In those trusted environments, we find out the true threat and help firms ensure they’re not overspending.” KPMG keeps abreast of the threats

and helps its clients to do the same. “At the moment, most systems handle information,” says Bonner. “But the trend that’s coming is that networks are being connected to physical things, such as medical systems and self- driving cars.” There will be enormous benefits from this connectivity, but it also presents new challenges. “Self-driving cars have great benefits,”


says Bonner. “But, if I could hack into them, I could have a traffic jam delivered to your headquarters – sort of a ‘spam jam’. We have to apply the lessons we’ve learnt in the online space to the new physical space in which we operate.”


Cyber security is a risk to be managed, not


eliminated. “If you strip searched everyone that came into your shop,” says Bonner, “you would have a low rate of shoplifting, but you would also have very few customers. However, if organisations add cyber security to the portfolio of risks they manage well and apply the right controls, they can look forward to another 50 years of growth.”
