Mono™ pump from NOV set to repeat 30-year success
A Mono™ Compact C progressing cavity pump provided by NOV has been specified as a replacement for a previous Mono pump that had operated without any problems for over 30 years. The new pump is being used in a fertilizer production process by GrowHow – a leading UK fertilizer manufacturer, and a major supplier to the chemical process industry.
GrowHow had been using an original SH80 pump for a demanding effluent transfer duty, which had given good service for over three decades. “The original pump was still working well, but unfortunately it had been discontinued and GrowHow decided to upgrade to the latest pump design,” explains NOV Account Manager Paul Green. “We proposed a Compact C range pump as the most appropriate modern alternative and it proved to be an excellent choice,” he adds.
“We needed something which combined excellent suction lift performance with the ability to handle high suspended solids content,” continues GrowHow’s Chris Smith. “It also had to be able to withstand the very aggressive nature of the effluent, so that it could provide us with a high level of reliability. The new pump has fitted the bill perfectly and is providing even better performance than the old SH80 unit.”
The Compact C range pump is being used to pump nutrient-rich effluent at the GrowHow production plant at Ince, near Chester. Driven by a fixed-speed
gearbox, it operates at 245rpm, handles a 3.25 bar pressure and provides a 19 m3/h capacity. It draws the effluent from an interceptor pit on a 3m lift, and transfers it over 100m to a holding sump. The effluent is then used as fertilizer by local farmers. GrowHow mounted the Compact C pump on a trolley so that it can be moved around the site to draw effluent from different sump tanks.
The progressive cavity action of the Compact C range pumps makes them ideally suited to applications where slurries, viscous or shear sensitive fluids must be handled, and significant suction lift capabilities are required.
They can operate at low speeds,which is ideal for reducing wear on abrasive applications, and their high-pressure capabilities eliminate the need to use a series of pumps, when pumping over long distances.

A sales and new product development specialist who helped to power up the Olympics has been appointed to head up the growth of the leading UK manufacturer of innovative precast concrete drainage systems, Kijlstra.
Billy Fairhurst joins the company, which has a sales office in Warwickshire and a new production facility in Somerset, as UK sales manager at a time when it is recruiting in many roles to cope with demand for its revolutionary square manholes and other drainage systems.
With more than 20 years’ experience in the water and telecoms sectors particularly, Billy was part of a team which designed and supplied an underground access chamber for the jointing of power cables for the London 2012 Games. This incorporated ease of access
to allow for overnight repair and replacement of surface aesthetics should faults occur.
Billy, 54, joins Kijlstra, whose products can be carbon- neutral, from a global manufacturer of preformed structural products for underground network access where he was business development manager responsible for special projects, water market sales, and sales through merchants and contractors. In another role he was also part of the team that launched Stakka Box to the telecoms market.
