NEWS Android Pay goes live in the UK

Google has launched its Android Pay payment service in the UK.


accept Android Pay, though it is set to be rolled out in other territories over the next few months. The service will work on devices running Android 4.4 or higher and fitted with an NFC chip. Customers with MasterCard or Visa debit cards will be able to make purchases at almost 460,000 contactless terminals across the country.

For purchases under £30, the phone simply needs to be awake and tapped on to the contactless reader. For payments over £30, the user needs to unlock their device with either a PIN, unlock pattern or fingerprint. Similar to Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, Android Pay uses tokenisation to secure payment information.

Launch partner banks include first direct, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, M&S Bank, MBNA, Bank of Scotland and Nationwide Building Society. Paul Horlock, Nationwide’s Head of Payments, says: “As one of the first to offer Android Pay, we are giving our customers a wide choice on how they want to make transactions. With our lives becoming increasingly more reliant on mobile phones, we believe the service will be a valuable addition as many look to consolidate a range of services into one device.”


NatWest, Santander and Barclays are notable absentees. The latter recently announced plans for an Android Pay rival, expected to go live in June (more on this elsewhere in the News section).
