START UP OF THE MONTH

account. Leaning heavily on our background of developing trading platform software for others, we quickly realised that there was huge demand for a serious trading platform that integrated account interaction in line with how traders actually behaved.

What has been your smartest move?

Many new apps fall at the first hurdle because the developers want to make it all singing and all dancing from the very beginning. In hindsight, it was a very smart decision not to overload Pelican with too many features from the offset.

We have a long list of designs for sexy game-changing features, which we have been desperate to introduce. However, from both a marketing message and a performance related perspective, it’s been crucial not to dilute the two core experiences; interaction and trade execution.

What was your biggest challenge/ setback?

It will be a familiar story to many who have tried to launch a new app or website, but getting the right development team in place has easily been our greatest challenge. Yet we turned what looked like a fatal

blow to Pelican into perhaps our best decision when we decided to start again from scratch after code we had commissioned was not up to scratch. We realised that rather than fiddle around with faulty code it was going to be quicker to start again, and has resulted in a far better product.

Where do you want to be in five years?

We want to be the Bloomberg for retail traders. The place where traders converse, analyse, get information and trade. Once fully optimised our motto will be ‘why trade anywhere else’ and in five years’ time we hope no one has an answer to that question.
