Barclays goes it alone with Android app NEWS

Barclays is set to unveil the UK’s first Android contactless payment service.

Taking advantage of Android being open source, Barclays is rolling out a Contactless Mobile app, which will be integrated with its existing banking app. Customers with an eligible NFC-enabled Android phone will be able to tap and pay for transactions below the £30 limit at contactless locations in the UK. Payments of up to £100 can be made by entering the card’s PIN through the app.

It’s a different approach than the bank took with Apple, which does not give open access to the NFC technology needed for mobile payments. Apple Pay launched in the UK last year, with Barclays only getting onboard in April.
Ashok Vaswani, Chief Executive of Barclays UK, says: “Giving customers the choice about how to make everyday payments while making it really easy for people to use our services is why we’ve designed this contactless payment functionality. It’s all there in one place, ready to go with no need to enter card details, delivering a brilliant experience in an instant.”
