HELPFUL TIPS Technique/Landmark • Patient should be sitting (in bed or chair) or standing; ensure shoulders back in a neutral position, not hunched forward. • Use pads of fingers to press along clavicle bone (above and below) to palpate for muscle tone/resistance . ○ Assess whether it is possible to push fingers under clavicle bone — indication of muscle loss.
• Use all fingers to palpate down neck to shoulder junction. ○ Assess for squaring at junction of neck for muscle loss (may have squishy or gelatin-like feel).
