Meeting IR’s future together

interest in the specialty is beyond incredible, research continues to tap the potential for IR in new areas of treatment, and opportunities for advances in the international, training and economics/health care policy initiatives are endless.

If you attended the SIR 2016 annual meeting in Vancouver, you must have noticed some of that excitement—the high- energy buzz noted throughout the entire convention center. If you didn’t attend, you missed presentations on cutting-edge research, valuable hands-on learning opportunities, and thought- provoking talks on competition, quality in today’s health care systems and more (read highlights of the meeting on page 20).

It is not surprising that this energy was so keenly felt in the Expo center, where leaders of industry in IR gathered to share with attendees their visions for the future of the specialty. clearly excited by these innovations. These advancements demonstrate that industry is keeping pace with our rapidly advancing clinical needs as we move forward to meet the incredible future potential of our field.

In fact, companies that had previously not entered our market are now trying to find solutions in IR. For example, one imaging company recently purchased a device manufacturer to focus on medical technology with a new and broader solution for IR.

These partners recognize that IRs are innovating at a record pace in order to meet the needs of our patients. We are using these improvements to address our needs to continue to provide longitudinal care .

As your president, I look forward to working with our corporate partners, dedicated SIR volunteers, the broader membership, and the society’s staff to represent interventional radiologists, both in private practice and the academic sphere. Together, we will continue to enhance the presence and recognition of IR throughout our practice environments.
