SIR 2017 CHAIR’S COLUMN By Robert J. Lewandowski, MD, FSIR

SIR 2017 goes to Washington

SIR 2016 may have recently concluded, but plans are already underway for the next SIR Annual Scientific Meeting in Washington, D.C., March 4–9, 2017.

With our international colleagues, we learned about the latest technologies and procedures that support the high- quality care we provide to our patients, and we explored state-of-the-art research concepts. The growth of our specialty in the United States and around the world is exciting. Next year, we will continue that momentum in our nation’s capital, returning to Washington, D.C., for the first time in almost 10 years.

The District of Columbia is certainly an appropriate location for our meeting. Instantly recognizable architecture and monuments will provide an unforgettable backdrop; and when we’re not engaged in interventional radiology matters, there will be an abundance of historic and educational activities for us to explore with our families. The energy and buzz surrounding our national decision-makers will help further galvanize our convention, no doubt leading to vigorous and interesting dialogue.

I have always enjoyed the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting, each time leaving energized to improve my practice towards

better patient care. I have been honored to serve on the SIR’s Annual Scientific Meeting Committee the past few years, as scientific chair in 2015 and workshop chair in 2016, and I value the friendships that I’ve made in the process. I am inspired to collaborate with J. Fritz Angle, MD, FSIR (past program chair), Daniel Sze, MD, PhD, FSIR (2017 scientific chair), and Brian Funaki, MD, FSIR (2017 workshop chair), as we add our perspective to the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting.

While we are excited to continue the growth and evolution of interventional radiology through our Annual Scientific Meeting, it is important that SIR 2017 feature all the standard hallmarks of an SIR annual meeting:

• High-quality educational programming • Comprehensive array of topics important to our growth as IRs

• Exciting exhibits from device manufacturers that hint at what tomorrow will bring

• Updates and developments from our colleagues around the world

• Opportunities to network with old and new friends

We look forward to a great meeting in Washington, D.C.— and to seeing you all there!
