their experiences in the field, data on deficiencies in attracting women and members of underrepresented minorities to the field, root causes of the lack of diversity, the importance of mentoring in increasing diversity, and the growth of the SIR Women in IR Section since its formation.
A keynote address by David Hickam, MD, MPH, director of the Clinical Effectiveness Research (CER) Methods program at the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), discussed how competition and quality are driving today’s health care systems, how PCORI is working to advance the vision of patient-driven, quality health care and how a growing specialty like
interventional radiology can contribute to advancing the PCORI research agenda.
Now in its fifth year, the SIR International Scholarship Program hosted 15 new scholars from 11 countries, including the first scholars from Belgium, Ethiopia, Egypt and Turkey. This program provides grants that enable physicians within 10 years of completion of training who are practicing outside North America an opportunity to attend the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting.
