on’t let her age, cheeky grin and diminutive height (5’2”) fool you: Emma is as strong as an ox, and regularly claims senior dry-tooling titles as well as youth ones. She began following in her dad Phil’s climbing footsteps as a toddler, and by age 13 could onsight 7c sport routes, boulder V8 and had begun her trad climbing initiation. Her passion, though, was the same as her dad’s: dry tooling and ice climbing. At this stage she committed to training and competing in these disciplines, and soon become the youngest woman to climb an M9 dry tooling route: First Blood at Hodge Close.
In 2016, Emma won the 2016 British Tooling Series (beating seniors as well as juniors) and came third (Under 19s) in the World Youth Championships in Rabeinstein, Italy. She has just finished ninth in the World Youth Championships this February.
Sum up climbing... in three words: Adventurous, empowering and fun.
If I hadn’t discovered climbing I’d be: I’m not sure, I can’t imagine not climbing!
The best thing to happen to me in the last year was:
Placing third in Rabeinstein in the Under 19 category at the age of 15.
Fave possessions:
My Nomic ice axes with my Krukonogi picks and my La Sportiva Mega Ice Evo boots.
I’m inspired by:
Ice climbers like Ines Papert, Sarah Hueniken, Tim Emmett and Will Gadd.
Other people probably see me as: Slightly crazy, enthusiastic and motivated.
Emma is a member of the GB Ice Climbing Team. Currently ranked 9th in the world, she is sponsored by Lyon Equipment, La Sportiva, Petzl, Julbo and

I was most scared when: I fell off trad-climbing and rotated upside down!
I’d like to learn how to: Spend time safely in the mountains.
Most people don’t know this but: I love frogs. Especially white tree frogs.
My goal in life is: To climb my hardest and keep on enjoying what I do. Also to teach and inspire others about my sport.
