R The “Highest Filmteam in the World”: Kurt Diemberger and Julie Tullis at Camp 2 on the great North Spur of K2 in 1983. They rolled about 1,000m of 16mm film on this ascent before being pushed back around 8,000m due to weather.

P Heavy storm on the great Peuterey Ridge of Mont Blanc in autumn 1971. In 1958 Kurt succeeded with the complete traverse of the whole ridge in five days. This photo won Kurt a wonderful first prize in a photo competition: a fantastic new BMW 1800!

Born March 16. Spending his


summers in the Alps, he quickly amasses an impressive list of alpine achievements and first ascents.

Direttissima, “The Giant Meringue” - then the hardest ice pitch in the Alps.


Makes landmark first ascent of Broad Peak with Hermann Buhl, Fritz Wintersteller and Marcus Schmuck – the first time an 8,000m peak is


climbed without high- altitude porters and oxygen. A few weeks later on Chogolisa, Buhl breaks off a big cornice and falls. His body has never been found.
