ABTA aims to make holidays greener

MAKE Holidays Greener (MHG) 2019 campaign has been launched by ABTA, encouraging holidaymakers and travel companies to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’.

A

MHG, which is run by ABTA – The Travel Association, in partnership with Travelife for Accommodation, encourages holidaymakers and the industry to create better places for locals to live in and better places for holidaymakers to visit.

Following MHG 2018’s ‘Say no to Plastic’ theme, ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ will continue to address the issue of plastics but also focus on the broader topic of waste management, including food waste. ABTA has developed an infographic off ering simple tips to help holidaymakers consider how they can ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ before they go on holiday, en-route, while they are away and when they get back home. ABTA is encouraging travel companies to use this as a way to help customers have a more positive social and environmental impact when they are on holiday. The infographic can be used as a poster in store or in resort, shared on social media or via travel companies’ websitesand is available to download. The campaign, which runs from June 5 until the end of September, also provides holidaymakers with the opportunity to make a pledge to help make their holiday more sustainable. There are 15 pledges available, which cover all aspects of a holiday - from buying local goods to using local transport. There is also a new ‘Go meat free’ pledge – which refl ects the increasing demand

for meat-free options. Holidaymakers who register a pledge on the website between une 5 and September 30, 2019 will also be entered into a prize draw to win a carry-on travel bag.

Meanwhile, travel companies can get involved in a number of ways, from looking at recycling in destination, reducing food waste by working with suppliers, fi nding credible alternatives for single-use plastics or inviting customers in resort to help take part in green initiatives, such as beach clean-ups. ABTA and Travelife for Accommodation will be supporting the industry throughout the campaign, off ering advice and guidance. A campaign support pack is available and includes tips on how to engage customers, suggested social media activity and example case studies for inspiration. Travel companies who haven’t received it can contact sustainabletourism@ abta.co.uk to sign up and request one.

Nikki White, ABTA’s Director of Destinations and Sustainability said: “This year’s campaign theme ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ highlights how holidaymakers and travel companies can each play their part in reducing their environmental impact.

“Whether it’s lending out holiday guides or

infl atables to others at the end of a trip or carrying reusable water bottles and bags, there are a number of ways holidaymakers can make a real diff erence and our campaign provides the guidance they need to help their chosen destination continue to be enjoyed by future generations.”

ABTA are encouraging holidaymakers to ‘Make Holidays Greener’ in new campaign ‘At the Top’ of world’s tallest!

Extra ship chartered by Brittany Ferries

BRITTANY Ferries has announced it will charter an additional ship ahead of the 2020 season to secure services between the UK, France, Spain and Ireland.

The Visentini-class ship, which currently sails between Ancona and Trieste in Italy for Stena Ro-Ro, will be operated by Brittany Ferries for one year from this November until November 2020.

Thousands of Brittany Ferries’ customers had their travel plans disrupted earlier this month following a fi re in the engine room of Pont-Aven, which had to be taken out of service temporarily.

Said Brittany Ferries Chief Executive Christophe Mathieu: ”This charter is an important step in our 2020 season planning. “We know that our fl agship Pont-Aven will be out of service for at least 10 weeks in the winter for the replacement of one of her four engines. This will leave a signifi cant gap in capacity across our network. “We also need to be sure that our fl eet can cope with any potential delays in the

DUBLIN Airport has welcomed the launch of Great Dane Airlines’ new Dublin to Aalborg service this summer. Aalborg is Denmark’s fourth largest city and is located in the North Jutland region, close to Denmark’s northern tip. The airline is operating the route twice weekly until July 26 and weekly thereafter until October 15.

“We’re delighted to welcome Great Dane Airlines to Dublin and Ireland,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison.

”Aalborg is a dynamic city with a distinct cultural atmosphere and great shopping. We look forward to working closely with Great Dane and its

BRITISH Airways will launch a new fl ight route between London Heathrow and Slovenian’s capital city, Ljubljana on July 15.

The route will run until September 2 with a fl ight time of just 2 hours, 20 minutes.

BA have launched the new fl ight as

delivery of our next cruise-ferry Honfl eur, ahead of the busy 2020 summer season. For these two reasons, we have taken the prudent decision to charter a new vessel for one year.

“Furthermore, and given what we learnt from Government Brexit no- deal preparations in March and April, we believe it is sensible to generate additional capacity to prepare for the impacts of Brexit, should it happen at the end of October and should our services be needed.”

The new ship will take over Brittany Ferries’ sailings from Cork to Santander, extending the operating window for this service. The route, which represents the fi rst time Spain and Ireland have been connected by ferry in their history, was opened in May 2018 for an initial two- year trial.

Connemara, which operates between Cork and Santander today, will be brought under the French-fl ag. This is six months earlier than originally planned and reinforces Brittany Ferries commitment to the employment of French seafarers.

management team to promote the new route,” he added.

Great Dane Airlines is one of 23 new routes and the last of four new airlines launching services at Dublin Airport this summer.

So far this year, more than 12.3 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport, a seven per cent increase compared to the fi rst fi ve months of last year.

Dublin Airport has welcomed an additional 764,000 passengers between January and May. Dublin Airport has fl ights to almost 200 destinations in 43 countries, operated by 53 airlines and is the 11th busiest airport in the EU.

New BA service to Slovenia

a result of a continued increase in the number of British travellers looking to explore what is now regarded as one of Europe’s leading green destinations. Last year Slovenia welcomed over 160,000 visitors from the UK, compared to around 130,000 in 2017 and less than 110,000 in 2016.
