forward immensely to taking on my new role as Chairman of the UK’s leading travel Association. Now, more than ever, it is vital that we have an Association that represents the voice of the industry, supports the needs of its Members and helps their customers to feel confi dent in travelling.
The Association has Protect travel recruitment call
THE Government must ensure that, after Brexit, there is a system where travel companies can continue to post workers abroad and that there is a suitable approach to freedom of movement which means the industry can recruit the staff it needs – says ABTA – The Travel Association.
New research from ABTA reveals that travel and tourism directly provides 1.52m jobs in the UK – equivalent to 4.8 per cent of all employment in the UK – and generates £67.7bn (GVA) to the UK economy1. The fi ndings, released at ABTA’s Travel Matters conference today, Wednesday 26 June 2019, also reveal: · The UK travel and tourism industry is a key employer of young people - 27 per cent of tourism workers are under 30 –10 per cent above the UK average. · Immigration plays a crucial part in ensuring the industry has the workforce it needs – the number of non-UK nationals working in travel & tourism is nearly

a third higher than UK average (13 per cent vs 10 per cent). · The average salary for employees in the tourism industry is £23K (£29k UK average).
· The majority of workers in the industry are educated to GCSE level or equivalent (36 per cent). · 6.5 per cent of tourism workers have completed an apprenticeship.
ABTA commissioned the research to help inform the debate about the UK’s approach to immigration after Brexit.
The UK Government is currently consulting on the Immigration White Paper, which sets out its proposals for immigration once the UK has left the European Union.
ABTA is encouraging the Government, and its EU counterparts, to agree reciprocal labour rules that enable the benefi ts of the Posted Workers Directive to be replicated for travel workers.

Big Event ballot raises £2,200 for cancer charity
J
OANNE Young from Macmillan Cancer Support was presented with a cheque for £2,200 at the Northern Ireland Travel News offi ces recently. Thanks to the generous donations from the Travel Industry at this year’s BIG Travel Trade Event, a total of £2,200 was raised for the charity.
When Rosetta Travel’s Trevor Ardies’ wife Caroline was diagnosed with breast cancer back in February it came like a bolt from the blue, bringing home to the wider Ardies family the plight of so many in the Province who know people fi ghting the deadly disease. And, in the face of often misinformed criticism of the National Health Service, Trevor was delighted with the fact that within 10 days of being diagnosed Caroline was in hospital under the NHS and had gone through initial surgery.
Now after chemo, and now with Caroline undergoing a course of radio therapy, Trevor wants to give something back to some of the people whose commitment and skill provides invaluable support and assistance to cancer suff erers and their families here in Northern Ireland.
“Talking to surgeons and doctors at the Ulster Hospital where Caroline was being treated, we decided that there could be no better organisation to help than Macmillan,” Trevor said.
“So that’s why I was delighted when Travel News agreed that they would nominate Macmillan as the charity to benefi t from the fundraising ballot at The Big Travel Trade Event recently.
“A tremendous total of more than £2,000 was raised on the night and Macmillan were absolutely delighted,” added Trevor.
