DUBLIN Airport has welcomed the launch of Great Dane Airlines’ new Dublin to Aalborg service this summer.

Aalborg is Denmark’s fourth largest city and is located in the North Jutland region, close to Denmark’s northern tip.

The airline is operating the route twice weekly until July 26 and weekly thereafter until October 15. “We’re delighted to welcome Great Dane Airlines to Dublin and Ireland,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison.

AFTER the Scottish Parliament went back on its pledge to scrap Air Passenger Duty (APD), a cut in the tax is ‘not likely’ in the rest of the UK as climate pressure on airlines grows.

The EU is moving closer to imposing a carbon tax

on fl ying and industry bodies in the UK and travel industry groups are divided on how hard to lobby the government on cutting or abolishing APD. ABTA Chief Executive Mark Tanzer called again for a review of APD recently, arguing for a tax policy “that does not unfairly penalise the industry or place UK airlines at a disadvantage”. ABTA has led industry demands to cut APD since initiating the Fair Tax on Flying campaign in 2011.

New air service to Aalborg in Denmark

”Aalborg is a dynamic city with a distinct cultural atmosphere and great shopping. We look forward to working closely with Great Dane and its management team to promote the new route,” he added. Great Dane Airlines is one of 23 new routes and the last of four new airlines launching services at Dublin Airport this summer.

So far this year, more than 12.3 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport, which is a seven per cent increase compared to the fi rst fi ve months of last year.

APD being reduced by Government unlikely

Alliance, of which ABTA is a member, told a Westminster policy forum: “I don’t think we’re going to see a cut in APD any time soon.” The Treasury raised more than £3.6 billion in APD in the 12 months to March. He added: “The government needs the money and giving a tax break to something seen as a leading cause of climate change is something we’re not going to see.”

However, Airlines UK, also a member of the Tourism Alliance, demanded ministers set out “a clear roadmap to cutting and eventually abolishing APD”. Meanwhile, VisitBritain Policy and Public Aff airs Manager Timothy Jenkins agreed, said: “It’s challenging to see APD being cut. Realistically, APD is not going to be reduced.”
