Next big thing: Ariana Grande racks up third singles chart-topper
BY ALAN JONES
riana Grande scores the third No.1 of her career, with brand new track Thank U, Next, dashing to a chart-topping debut although it didn’t drop until Sunday (November 4), giving it fewer than five days to impact. Thank U, Next racked up impressive sales of 72,881 copies (including 61,411 from sales-equivalent streams) in its truncated timeframe – higher than a full seven-day tally from any record for 13 weeks - and is Grande’s third No.1, although the first on which she gets solo billing. The others, both from 2014: Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea) and Bang Bang, credited to Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj. Thank U, Next is also Grande’s ninth Top 10 hit and 24th Top 75 entry. After two weeks at No.1, Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s Shallow – the breakout hit from A Star Is Born – is derailed by Grande’s entrance, dipping to No.2 (46,703 sales). Jess Glynne stopped by Strictly Come Dancing to perform new single Thursday last week and, having previously moved 24-23-18, the track exploded. Jumping to No.7 (27,142 sales), it is the third Top 10 single from her second album, Always In Between. The first Top 10 record to feature Thursday in its title, it nestles up against the eighth Top 10 Friday hit, Dave & Fredo’s Funky Friday (4-6, 36,250 sales). Halsey scores her third Top 10 hit but her first in a solo capacity as Without Me jumps 22-9 (25,915 sales). The rest of the Top 10: Woman Like Me (2-3, 39,565 sales)

Benny Blanco’s debut hit as an artist, Eastside (with Halsey & Khalid) had its run at No.1 limited to one week in September, when it was usurped by Calvin Harris’ Sam Smith collaboration, Promises. It won’t happen this time around for Blanco, because he and Harris have joined forces for I Found You, which debuts at No.35 (13,988 sales). Pink’s version of A Million Dreams, from the upcoming The Greatest Showman Reimagined album climbs 43-37 (13,378 sales), while Panic! At The Disco’s version of The Greatest Show, from the same set, debuts at No.51 (10,283 sales).
