he sky darkens above Cable Street in East London, as music student Janée Bennett is en route to a songwriting session with Roll Deep. She’s apprehensive, but she holds her nerve and heads into the studio.
“There were about 15 people in the room and I’d never done a session before,” Bennett tells Music Week. “I wrote a song called Do Me Wrong
and I featured on it.”
It sounds simple, but Bennett’s first foray into songwriting came while she was studying music industry management and marketing at the University Of Buckingham. She’d taken a place on the course because it brought her south from Manchester – where her family ran a reggae record shop and she grew up avidly consuming pop, house, indie and more – closer to London and the music business she was seeking a way into.
“You’ve just got to be brave,” she says. “I was intimidated and shy at first but you just have to have a word with yourself and say ‘Right, come on, this is a great opportunity, you need to go and do this.’”
