Nevertheless, the in-house producers at Shout! Fac- tory (Cliff MacMillan) and the BFI (James Blackford) fine-tuned the digital masters delivered to them to their own liking, resulting in sometimes very differ- ent-looking or -sounding end products. For example, Shout! Factory presents the mono titles in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0, whereas the BFI favors LPCM 1.0 mono—a more centered mono presentation. The BFI does offer DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 German soundtracks for AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD, NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE, WOYZECK and FITZCARRALDO, while of their shared titles, Shout! Factory offers only NOSFERATU’s German track in 5.1. There is also a frame rate differential be- tween the US and UK releases in some cases, as you will note by comparing the running times of those titles shared by the two sets. Herzog’s debut feature, SIGNS OF LIFE

(Lebenszeichen, 1968), which remarkably features a protagonist named Stroszek, is not included in either set. The earliest material on offer are four short films scattered throughout the BFI set,

programmed as filler rather than as chronologic touchstones. Three of these—“The Unprecedented Defence of the Fortress Deutschkreuz” (1967), “Last Words” (1968), and “Precautions Against Fanat- ics” (1969)—appear in support of AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD; “Handicapped Future” (1970) is on the WOYZECK disc.

EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL Auch Zwerge haben klein angefangen 1970, 96m (S!F)

Exclusive to the Shout! Factory set, EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL—the second of Herzog’s films to be released though shot after his third, FATA MORGANA—is ostensibly the story of a trouble-making group of little people who stage a protest against the institution where they live when its flustered manager (Pepi Hermine) decides to hold their laughing ringleader, Pepe (Gerd Gickel), hos- tage in his barricaded office. As their chiding be- havior escalates from revelry to violence and surreal

An institution’s harried manager (Pepi Hermine) holds a revolution’s cackling ringleader (Gerd Gickel) hostage in EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL.
