Multigenerational living is a growing trend. We ask experts experienced in designing for households with multiple age groups what is involved and what it takes for a retailer to cater to the needs of this market. Francesca Seden reports

AMA Research, while figures from the NHBC Foundation estimate that that there are currently 1.8 million multigenerational households now in the UK – around 7% of all UK households.

Factors driving this include rising house prices, which have made it more difficult for young people to get onto the housing ladder and more difficult for families to afford their own homes. In some cases, they are choosing to pool their resources with their parents and invest in larger family homes that can accommodate three generations.


Living this way has several benefits – it helps older people beat loneliness, which in turn helps them live healthier and more fulfilled lives, while they impart knowledge, wisdom and values to the youngest in the household. Their parents too might experience less stress, as there might not be the same kind of childcare pressures, having nan and granddad on hand to help look after the kids.
