I EDITOR’S COMMENT
STRONGER TOGETHER
think we can probably all agree that this has been a very surreal few weeks. If ever there was a time when we, as an industry, needed to come together as a community, it is now in these unprecedented and truly uncertain times. While there’s no doubt that the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic will have a serious effect on businesses across the sector, the one thing we do know for sure is that things will calm down and life will carry on as normal eventually. In the meantime, as our cover says, we urge everyone to stay strong, trust your experience, trust your instincts and trust each other. By the time this issue hits desks, the situation will almost
certainly have changed, but hopefully our coverage not only paints a picture of the impact the situation is having on everyone now, but will offer some clarity, reassurance and positivity in these testing times. We’ve talked to a range of suppliers and retailers about their experiences and the strategies they’re putting in place to cope in the short- and long- term. It is clearly a worrying time for us all, but what’s encouraging is that people are choosing to err on the positive side and look for opportunities.
Their
Life will carry on. In the meantime, stay strong, trust your experience, trust your instincts and trust each other
advice: use
this time to develop new ideas, practices and new strategies. In the true spirit of keeping calm and carrying on, elsewhere in the magazine it’s pretty much business as usual. You can read our review of the kbb Birmingham show on pages 34-46. Life has changed rapidly since then and it would be easy to forget just what a superb few days it was for the sector. Hopefully our coverage – packed with news, retailer comment and new innovation – is a reminder of a positive time and of what this industry can achieve when we all come together.
We’ve also looked at the growth in multigenerational living and what that means for our sector. Our special feature on pages 49-58 should give you some food for thought on handling these design projects. We’ve also talked in length about the subject with Adam Thomas
(pages 60-61). Not only is he a pioneer in accessible design, he was also the worthy winner of the Special Achievement Award at last month’s kbbreview Retail & Design Awards.
Another expert designer who has spent years exploring this area of design is Johnny Grey. In our interview with him, on pages 63-64, he explains the principles of multigenerational design and why the sector could provide the KBB industry with huge opportunities. That just leaves me enough room to wish you all the best as we work
through the current challenges. Let us know how you’re doing through this and, most importantly, what, if anything, we can do to help.
