See stage classics set outside this summer season. By Danielle DiMeglio

THERE’S SOMETHING EXTRA special about seeing a stage production outside. It seems laid-back and modern, without the stuffiness of a theater or a fancy dress code, while at the same time reminiscent of days when traveling troubadours and theater companies would set up shop along the road and perform wherever they pleased. Here in Los Angeles, we’re lucky to have enough outdoor performance spaces and touring productions to make any theater- lover swoon.

Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum For more than 40 years, this venue has

drawn theater aficionados to its storied, open-air stage for engaging productions in a magical setting. The 299-seat amphitheater in Topanga Canyon hosts audiences of all ages for plays from a wide range of genres, like Shakespearean classics and folktales. This season, catch highlights such as William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (through Sept 4) and the stage adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm (through Oct 1). à 310-455-3723, theatricum.com

favorite works come to life at the historic Old Zoo in Griffith Park. Independent

Shakespeare Co. puts on a series of lively productions each week, inviting audiences to take a seat on the grass (read: bring a picnic blanket) and enjoy performances like this season’s headliners: Measure for Measure and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Insider tip: Before the show starts, grab a bite from the concession tent, which features sweet treats from the Village Bakery & Café, homemade kettle corn and more. à 818-710-6306, iscla.org
