Bar Awards 2017

MOST CREATIVE DRINK LIST PRESENTED BY HENDRICK’S GIN

THE WALKER INN

Through the Normandie Club’s secret back door, fog rises from a Big Sur–inspired drink made with pine- infused brandy, and hot s’mores are served alongside a smoked chocolate Sazerac made with a graham- cracker–washed bourbon. The Walker Inn is perhaps the most ambitious project yet from the booze wizards at Proprietors LLC and 213 Nightlife. Guests in the lounge choose from two menus (the themed Walker, which changes every month or two, and the classic Book), while those with coveted bar seats order omakase-style, as the talented bar crew blows minds with two wholly original beverages tailored to imbibers’ every whim. à 3612 W 6th St (213-263-2709, thewalkerinnla.com)

RUNNERS-UP: ACCOMPLICE, THE CORNER DOOR, ROOM 31

BEST BAR FAMILY BIG BAR

Despite its name, Big Bar is actually quite small: A crowd of just 15 people makes the space feel snug, though more like a friendly hug than a claustrophobic nightmare. Sit back, relax and sip creations from the uncomplicated yet whimsical drink program, all prepared with fine spirits, house-made syrups and, most importantly, a whole lot of love. The bartenders making your cocktails work in perfect synchronization with one another, and have fun while they’re at it; the team here is so strong and so loyal that, collectively, its members have worked at Big Bar for more than 46 years—and snagged our award for Best Bar Family two years in a row. à 1927 Hillhurst Ave (323-644-0100, alcovecafe.com/bigbar)

RUNNERS-UP: BAR 1886, THE NORMANDIE CLUB, SCOPA ITALIAN ROOT S BEST BAR DESIGN HIGHLAND PARK BOWL

There are few L.A. watering holes more beautiful than Highland Park Bowl. Originally opened in 1927, then reimagined in the ’60s as a cherished music venue called Mr. T’s Bowl, the space was transformed again in 2016 and is now a gorgeous, steampunkesque bowling alley and bar. The details here are meticulous, as exhibited by the chandeliers crafted from repurposed pinsetters, vintage bowling banners lining the alley’s eight lanes and a stairwell display showing off bowling artifacts—trophies, photos, medals—behind glass portholes. Bowlers order from a menu boasting craft cocktails and a rotating selection of local beers, lounge on leather Chesterfield sofas and take in the gorgeous view between games. à 5621 N Figueroa St (323-257-2695, highlandparkbowl.com)
