Music & Nightlife

Edited by Michael Juliano timeout.com/los-angeles/music @mjuliano admission Free Summer concert series mean our two

favorite things: free tunes and the great outdoors. By Michael Juliano

COME SUMMER IN L.A., we shed our layers and, in the case of these concerts, our wallets. Venture outside to free shows across the city, from the Santa Monica beachfront to the shadow of a Downtown skyscraper.

Off the 405 Hilltop sunset views and rising bands—

including Savoy Motel and former Kurt Vile guitarist Steve Gunn—combine to make this Getty tradition a worthy destination for Angelenos on both sides of the 405. à Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Dr (310-440-7300, getty .edu). July 29, Aug 26 6–9pm.

Twilight Concerts Thursday nights on the Santa Monica Pier

have become a summertime rite of passage, thanks to Twilight Concerts. Budget cuts and crowding concerns have forced the series to downsize, but it’s still the best spot to hear free tunes by the beach, with sets from Warpaint,

KCRW Summer Nights Everyone’s favorite NPR affiliate has a

hand in a half dozen summer concert slates at locations like Union Station and the Hammer Museum. But the party-till- midnight bashes at Chinatown Central Plaza have become a particular favorite. Familiar KCRW personalities like Jeremy Sole, Garth Trinidad, Travis Holcombe and Raul Campos spin the tunes at these food truck–fueled block parties. à Chinatown Central Plaza, 943 N Broadway (events.kcrw .com). Aug 5, Sept 2 at 5pm.

Sunset Concerts at the Skirball

Miami Horror and Eric Burdon & the Animals. à Santa Monica Pier, Colorado and Ocean Aves, Santa Monica (310-458-8901, santamonicapier.org). Thu at 7pm. Through Aug 17.

Sunset Concerts at the Skirball The Skirball’s courtyard amphitheater hosts

performers who reinterpret roots music, such as Nickel Creek guitarist Sean Watkins and Afro-electronic band Ibibio Sound Machine. Mosey around the Paul Simon retrospective, which will stay open late and is also free. à Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N Sepulveda Blvd (310-440- 4500, skirball.org). July 27–Aug 31: Thu at 8pm.

Sound in Focus For three weeks in July, the front lawn of the

stellar Annenberg Space for Photography hosts a startlingly impressive lineup of music. R.S.V.P. to guarantee entry—and soon, with huge names like Miguel, Paul Oakenfold and Rodrigo y Gabriela on the lineup. à Century Park, 2000 Avenue of the Stars (soundinfocus.kcrw .com). July 15, 22, 29 at 7pm.

Grand Performances With Japanese hip-hop and a pan-African

funk band, this series spans multiple genres and continents. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Gaby Moreno and Buyepongo are among this year’s performers on the Downtown stage. à California Plaza, 350 S Grand Ave (213-687-2190, grandperformances.org). Thu–Sun at various times. Through Aug 26.

Pershing Square Downtown Stage Downtown’s concrete square gets a bit livelier
