Surfing in L.A. Wave of the future

The Black Surfers Collective ensures diversity on our shores, one school bus at a time.

Members of the BSC

L.A.’S BEACHES HAPPEN to be some of California’s—and the country’s—most diverse. Partially responsible is the Black Surfers Collective, a group that’s been promoting diversity in the sport of surfing through community activities, outreach and camaraderie. “We make a conscious effort to get more people of color down to the beach,” says Damien Baskette, the BSC’s director of communications. “Quite often there are kids growing up in communities five miles from the coast who have literally never seen the water. We try to use surfing and our love of the ocean to introduce these children to new opportunities.” The BSC encourages kids of color from across the city to take advantage of the opportunity to surf and to be a part of the beach culture from which they were historically shunned. Says Baskette, “You’d be surprised how much spending time in the ocean can open up their minds and spirits.” à Learn more about the BSC at blacksurferscollective.org.
