Denvir’s work Heidi Merrick BEST NEW SHOPS Wargo

solution to a problem and have a tangible object to show for it is very rewarding.” à boycestudio.com, instagram.com/boycestudio

Christian Lee Wargo Wargo grew up doing carpentry and set design

with his father, and drawing with his art- teacher mother. “They put a lot of love into anything they worked on,” he says. Though Wargo went to school for cabinetmaking and fine woodworking, he ended up becoming a musician, touring in his twenties and thirties with his own bands, Crystal Skulls and Poor Moon, and as a bassist for Fleet Foxes. He always knew he’d get back to woodworking at some point and recently began crafting three- legged stools. “You have to look at each piece of wood like it had a life of its own, studying the grain structure and allowing that to influence how the piece should be shaped,” he says. “You’re always learning something new.” à christianwargo.com, instagram.com/christianwargo

Orris Perfumery, Melrose The husband-and-wife team behind Orris have bottled up California into small-batch, made-in-L.A. scents. At their cozy perfumery on Melrose Avenue, you can find the sunny Luce del Sole; Lavandula brightened with Bulgarian lavender, white grapefruit and jasmine; and Covey, a leather- scented perfume that works for both men and women. Want to transport yourself outside the city? Take a whiff of Orris’s new collection, Saguara, which captures the calm of the desert’s dusty landscape. à 7970 ½ Melrose Ave (323-556-6026, orrisperfumery.com)

Heidi Merrick, Arts District SoCal designer Merrick’s first storefront contrasts her ethereal dresses and luxurious home wares with a design that emulates the rugged California landscape. At the center of the space sits a large sand- and-rock art installation by Merrick’s friend, French artist Joséphine Wister Faure, and the walls are lined with custom surfboards shaped by Merrick’s brother Britt. The shop serves as a functioning atelier, with a drafting table, bolts of fabric and on-site tailoring; there are also rotating art installations, live acoustic music sets and a local succulent market. à 115 W Ninth St (310-424-5520, hmerrickofcalifornia.com)
