What’s up in Los Angeles THEN AND NOW Grand Central Market

CIRCA 1930 As soon as it opened in 1917, Grand Central Market became the place for shoppers from a cross-section of city life to pick up daily groceries and sundries. Broadway was the commercial center of Los Angeles back then, and vendors there sold everything from produce and dry goods to food from diverse immigrant communities. Even during the Great Depression, when this photo was taken, the market remained vibrant and well stocked.

2017 This year, Grand Central Market celebrates a century of operation. The market’s offerings have evolved with shifting tastes and shopping habits, and stalls have changed hands many times. These days, it’s a dining destination, with eaters flocking to line up for Eggslut, Madcapra and other new-wave vendors. Amid the changes, some of the market’s more old-school players still satisfy the crowds; China Cafe has remained a market classic since opening in 1959.
