Anthony C Beilenson Park & Lake Balboa Play in L.A.

These playgrounds have the cool factor that your kids will go nuts over. By Stephanie Cary

THANKS TO L.A.’S mild climate, little Angelenos can play outdoors almost every day of the year, and playgrounds abound. You could go to one of hundreds of local parks for swings and a slide, or you can head to one of L.A.’s best playgrounds, each of which has an X-factor that gives it an edge over the rest. Whether it’s a spot with a fun theme or a great water feature, these play spaces are sure to entertain even the most adventurous little tykes.

1 Anthony C. Beilenson Park and Lake Balboa

This maritime-themed, universally accessible playground features sand boxes, musical instrument stations and climbing structures in addition to slides, monkey bars and more typical playground offerings. Oh, and it’s right next to a beautiful lake with BBQ pits and picnic areas perfect for birthday parties. Extra-cool factor: Sun shades help protect little ones and keep them cool on hot days. à 6300 Balboa Blvd, Lake Balboa

Time Out Los Angeles January–March 2017 46 2 Culver City Park Douglas Park This playground was designed by the

Danish company KOMPAN to challenge children’s minds and bodies. There are rock-climbing cubes, rope challenges and ladders, in addition to regular playground equipment; all work to encourage kids to problem-solve as they play. Extra-cool factor: There’s a water feature and skate park, too! à 9700 Jefferson Blvd, Culver City

3 Douglas Park This adorable playground has all the

usual hits, but also offers tennis courts and a concrete rink for kids who want to ride bikes and scooters. Extra-cool factor: Kids can learn to lawn-bowl on the park’s lawn-bowling green. à 2439 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica

4 La Laguna de San Gabriel This playground is perfect for little

scramblers. It features 14 climbable, whimsically-shaped concrete structures inside a sand-filled lagoon: think Minnie the whale, Ozzie the octopus and even a dragon. Extra-cool factor: Many of the structures have slides for easy (and fun) dismounts. à 300 W Wells St, San Gabriel
