Contactless scanner measures critical dimensions of large extruded products
LaserLinc, which makes technology that measures the dimensions of extruded products such as pipe, has introduced the TLAser1240 scanning laser micrometer – a single-axis diameter gauge that inspects large products without contact. The device measures
diameter, height, or width up to 9.1in (231mm) and is designed for use in industries including plastics and rubber extrusion. It can measure diameter, ovality, wall thickness, concentricity, eccentricity and inside diameter. The equipment can
measure any material – even if it transparent, says the company. It can handle 1,600 measurements per second: for
MATERIALS HANDLING Separator keeps out the dust to boost product quality
Conair has introduced the DeDuster C-50 separator, a compact, easy-to-use unit that can be mounted above the machine feedthroat. It helps to prevent
problems such as haziness, gels and black spots, by removing dust, angel hair and streamers from polymer feedstock.
The lightweight unit
weighs 20lbs (9kg) and requires only 9.5in (241mm) of additional headroom above the feedthroat of an extruder and loading or drying hoppers. It features stainless steel construction, 110 or 220

V operation and only con- sumes 2-3 CFM (3.4-5 m3/h) compressed air at 20-30 psi (1.5-2 bar) pressure. As raw material enters the unit, a servo-driven agitator eliminates bridging and regulates flow. Compressed air is then introduced, and splits into two streams: one passes through an ioniser and into the body of the DeDuster – breaking the electrostatic bond between pellets and the dust/angel hair falling through it; the second air stream passes through a venturi to create a vacuum that draws the lighter

contaminants away as the heavier, clean pellets continue down into the processing machine. The dust and angel hair
are carried into two mini- cyclones where that they fall out of
suspension and into a clear catch bin. Air is exhausted through a filtered outlet. The physics of the venturi and ioniser ensures that almost all dust and angel- hair streamers are separated from the pellets. The unwanted elements can be seen to accumulate in the transparent catch bin. The DeDuster C50 separa-
tor yields clean dust-free pellets, making it ideal for medical processors and others that must banish imperfections from finished parts. ❙

a line running at 50 feet/ minute, this means that a measurement is made every .007in of product. There is a separate
transmitter, receiver, and rigid mounting rail – allowing mounting in any orientation and keeping out of the way of moving product and equip- ment. Two units can be used
together to get dual-axis (XY) inspection, or three for three-axis diameter and accurate ovality measurement. The equipment can be
integrated with the Total Vu HMI – using a standard Ethernet connection – for com- plete product and process monitoring and control, or with line control PLCs using the
SmartLinc processor and industrial communications such as EtherNet/IP. “Prior to the TLAser1240, measuring large parts was a difficult task,” said Jeff Kohler, vice president of LaserLinc. “This micrometer solves this problem with both speed and precision.” ❙
