European countries fared better than their Western European counterparts? The total number of sites in Central Europe (Czech
and Slovak Republics, Poland and Hungary) is currently 1,536, a 2.7% increase compared with the 1,495 that AMI had listed in 2012. However, the upward trend and increase in sites is not the same for all countries. The number of injection moulding machines provides
more detail to the picture. Poland’s total injection moulding machinery in 2012 was 9,745, whilst most recently AMI calculated it at 9,541. This is the only country to register a decrease in machinery, with Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia all growing on their 2012 numbers. The Czech Republic has gone from
This article is an assessment of a selected portion of the AMI database of injection moulders in Europe. AMI’s injection moulding databases cover an extensive selection of countries and for each site provides address, named contacts and production information (including machinery, markets served, polymers used and services). 6,285 to 8,262, Hungary from 4,898 to 5,058 and Slovakia 1,511 to 2,466. Large corporations are attracted by the lower
operational costs in Central Europe and have made the strategic decision to develop manufacturing eastwards. For example, the automotive industry is developing strongly in the region, with Hellermanntyton, for example, completing its plant in Poland in 2016. But it is not just the automotive supply chain that is investing in the region. Toy brick maker Lego, for instance, expand- ed its Hungarian production in 2015. The Czech Republic and Slovakia have increased
their total sites and Hungary has stayed virtually the same. In regards to machinery the significant increase for the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary is disproportionate to the general trend amongst the 21 European countries AMI analysed where 11 countries saw an increase and 10 a decrease in total machinery operated. Equally, of those 21 countries only eight saw an increase in the number of injection moulding sites with 13 decreasing. Central Europe has generally benefitted from the movement of Western European production to lower cost bases, helping the region’s recovery from the recession, while many of the western markets have struggled to recover at the same rate.
