Assessing Europe’s injection moulding sector
Western Europe experienced modest growth in its injection moulding sector in 2016. Overall, AMI esti- mated in its European Report that polymer demand for injection moulding in Western Europe grew 1.6% in 2016, with Germany continuing to remain the dominant force in the industry. Central and Eastern European countries have seen
polymer demand grow for injection moulding at a slightly higher rate than their western counterparts. Hungary and Poland are estimated to have grown at just under 2% in 2016. The Eastern countries are expected to be where growth will be strongest – as Western Euro- pean companies are attracted to establish plants to serve the growing local markets or consolidate their manufacturing footprint within lower cost regions, while foreign investment from companies outside the EU are looking to establish or expand their European presence. AMI Databases has researched injection moulders in
21 selected European countries, with a specific focus on the number of sites and machines in operation in those countries. AMI estimates that its data covers approxi- mately 70% of manufacturers using injection moulding

Compounding Worldhas drawn on AMI’s injection moulding databases to assemble this snapshot of the current shape of the European moulding industry
technology in Europe. As well as the broader trends in the industry, AMI
has tracked the changes at manufacturing site level for injection moulders across Europe. In 2012 AMI’s databases contained 9,635 sites in Europe that carried out injection moulding, but for 2017 the total number has declined slightly, now standing at 9,340 – a reduction of 3%. This only tells part of the story. The quantity of sites and indeed machinery within specific countries, particu- larly those in Central Europe, provide good insight into
