Feddem has opened a new demonstration compounding line based around its FEd 52 mTS twin-screw extruder. The 300 m2
to allow compounding trials and materials tests to be performed under realistic production conditions. it is located in niederzissen, germany, using space leased from Akro-plastic, which like Feddem is a member of the Feddersen group. The flexible line has up to
13 metering feeders for producing a wide range of formulations. The extruder and ancillary equipment are made from hard-wearing materials so that they can withstand abrasive and
be installed onto the drive unit in just a few steps”. The line includes up to

32 l/d to 42/ld and 52 l/d,” he says, adding: “we have also built the extruder frame in two sections, thus ensuring that processing units with a different do/di ratio, but with the same centre distance, can

Feddem plans to add underwater pelletizing and a second extruder – the dual-level platform has room for an additional line. if required, material samples can be tested using Akro- plastic’s accredited labora- tory which is next door. Feddem was formed in
late 2009 when the Fed- dersen group acquired the twin-screw extruder manufacturer decroupet. ❙

twin-screw extruders ensinger adds new coperion line
Ensinger has ordered a new coperion ZSK mc18
twin-screw
extruder for the production of reinforced compounds at its main factory in nufringen, germany. The machine is equipped with 45-mm diameter screws, two ZS-B side feeders and one ZS-Eg twin-screw side degassing unit. The ZSK mc18
is coperion’s
latest extruder design, offering very high torque levels. Ensinger will use the line to compound engineering plastics, such as pA, pEEK and pET, with reinforcements including glass or carbon fibres.
The machine supplied to Ensinger is a special high-
62
temperature version that can deliver approximately 50% higher heating capacities. This ensures that processing temperatures above 350˚c can be maintained reliably and precisely, which is particularly important when compounding pEEK resins. one of the
deciding factors for selecting the ZSK mc18
was its
improved temperature control in the extruder processing section. The cooling channels in the barrel run at right angles to the material flow, giving a high cooling capacity

and very balanced cooling. cartridge heaters are used to generate heat directly inside the process section. The wear- resistant oval liners are shrink- fitted into the extruder barrels for optimum thermal transfer.
coperion’s patented Feed
Enhancement Technology (FET) is used in one of the ZS-B side feeders to assist with the handling of high- volume fillers and additives with a low density. The entrained air is removed through a gas- permeable wall in the barrel near the feed entry point to increase
the throughput rate. ❙
