Fire retardants | additives feature

stable foam barrier when exposed to fire. This acts as a barrier and reduces heat release rates and prevents the propagation of fire. Perstorp says that Charmor PP100 allows the

production of FR formulations that have a lower density than those based on minerals. The additive has a low melting point and excellent polymer compatibility. “Being a polymer, Charmor PP100 becomes part or

the polymeric system,” explains Perstorp’s market development manager, David James. “This fact improves flow during thermoplastic processing and gives more robust, reproducible and reliable mechani- cal and fire properties.” NASA Kennedy Space Center scientists Martha Williams and Trent Smith have discovered that inher- ently flame-retardant thermoplastic polymers polyhy- droxyamide (PHA) and polymethoxyamide (PMeOA) can be useful as an additive to impart flame retardant properties to other compatible thermoplastics such as nylons, polyesters, styrenics, acrylics and some elastomers. Compared to traditional FR additives, PHA and PMeOA have minimal impact on the mechanical properties of the matrix polymer, and have been shown

to actually enhance them in some cases. Also, they do not decompose into corrosive or toxic compounds during combustion and they can be processed at elevated temperatures. The physical and chemical mechanisms which impart flame retardancy of these additives include their inhibition of free radical oxidation in the vapour phase,
