screw laboratory extruder line, which is available as a stand-alone extruder or with downstream film, sheet, or profile extrusion capabilities. Sino-Alloy Machinery is also active in the lab

compounding market, and its latest model is the PSM20A co-rotating twin-screw extruder that has a

screw diameter of 21.7 mm, an L/D ratio of 32 or 40, and a 5.5 kW drive. Throughputs range from 2-15 kg/h, depending on the materials being processed. The extruder’s clam-shell barrel can be quickly opened for rapid cleaning and changeovers, and features a high- precision hinged design to ensure leak-free processing. Rondol specialises in lab-scale processing equip- ment and recently introduced new options for its

Microlab, a 10-mm twin-screw lab extruder. The system is now available in three length/diameter ratios: 20:1, 25:1, and 40:1. An “easy-clean” barrel allows the user to remove the barrel liners as well as the screws to ease thorough cleaning. The Microlab is available in an all stainless-steel version for pharmaceutical applica- tions, with an option for GMP certification. DSM Xplore recently introduced the Xcelera, a

tabletop, twin-screw micro extruder with 2 ml and 5 ml barrel inserts designed for the hot melt extrusion (HME) development of pharmaceutical-polymer systems. The 2 ml barrel insert uses less than half the amount of sample required with the 5 ml insert, which can be important when working with expensive drug substanc- es in early stage development, says the company. The Xcelera enables high torque at low processing tempera- tures to reduce the risk of drug degradation. The extruder can be set to batch mode or to continuous mode using a recirculation channel. DSM Xplore offers interchangeable screws for the

Xcelera including co- or counter-rotating screws, elongated forced feeding screws, and screws with flight slots for maximum dispersion.
