I’m trying to maintain a balanced diet. Should I include seafood?
Seafood is an excellent source of lean protein and nutrients. Compared to a 3-ounce serving of top sirloin, which has about 25g of protein and 5g of saturated fat, a 3-ounce serving of salmon has about 20g of protein and 1g of saturated fat. Fats contained in certain fish such as salmon, Atlantic mackerel and sardines are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids known to promote heart health and protect the body against heart disease. Seafood provides many nutrients that help keep the body running, including iodine, selenium, zinc and potassium. Iodine is important for the thyroid gland and selenium makes enzymes that help to protect the body from cancer. Fish and shellfish are also excellent sources of many vitamins, including vitamins A and D. Did we mention that seafood also makes for the perfect light meal when weather is warm? Go ahead, eat up!

I need healthy recipes for summer potlucks and picnics. Any ideas?
One easy way to add a healthy twist to classic dishes is to up the amount of veggies. Spinach, squash and eggplant will pack flavor and nutrients into lasagnas, pastas, sandwiches and even burgers. Update classic potato and pasta salads with light sour cream or yogurt in place of mayo. Punch up the flavor with fresh herbs and garlic. Dessert should be no problem with all of the season’s fresh fruit. Dip the freshest in melted dark chocolate or simply serve straight from the farm. Showcase summer berries and stone fruits in a fruit crisp with a dollop of Greek yogurt. What more could you need?
