All the eventualities are prepared for in advance as far as possible when star- ting up compost and mushroom production facilities. The stakes are high for the new facility, suppliers and construction contractors to make sure everything proceeds according to plan and on time. And that was naturally the case when the gigantic Yuguan project in China (see MB73), which I am involved in, started. But as things turned out... The straw pre-wet process had been scheduled to slot in with the projected filling plans and to coincide with the timing of cropping cycles in the growing rooms. But unfortunately, as often happens when new projects are started, a few delays occured. On this occasion, the phase III was not completely emptied on time at the phase II-III tunnel facility. If everything had gone according to plan, filling phase I in the tunnels and emptying phase III should have taken place at the same moment, but in different halls. Instead, we could only use a single hall – namely the filling and inoculation hall. So we were forced to come up with a creative solution. Luckily, Johan Hoekstra (involved at the time in the Yuguan compost yard), had the luminous idea of placing a large board to create a partition on the conveyor belt in the filling/inoculation hall (see photo). This board prevented the incuba- ted compost from dropping onto the central conveyor, but falling instead into the Schuitenmaker loader that was, of course, positioned underneath. This meant we could fill the tunnels with the phase I compost using the large conveyor with the cassette filler, and at the same time empty the phase III compost via the emptying winch and the board. This solution allowed us to fill phase III in the growing rooms, no rooms were left unnecessarily empty, and, more importantly– no compost was wasted! This is naturally not the correct method and certainly not the recommended level of hygiene. But in a difficult situation….necessity is the mother of invention.
