Lambert Spawn has a long history, that started in 1907, when Louis Lambert became the first commercial manufacturer of pure culture brick spawn. He was also the first to discover and patent a method to produce spawn on pasteurized grain, still used to manufacture commercial spawn today. According to co-owner Scott McIntyre, the drive for innovation didn’t stop there. “Through our nearly 100 years in business, the demand for quality, consistency, innovation, and customer service has been the lifeblood of our company and will be for generations to come. In 1999, Lambert engineers developed our proprietary “LBI” manufacturing process. It is versatile and efficient; allowing us to provide the highest quality, most consistent spawn on the market. To meet growing demand, a second production facility was added in 2010. At this same time, another Lambert Innovation, Speed Spawn, was gaining rapid market share in our local market. The concept behind Speed Spawn is faster colonization, increased nutrients in our sub- strate, and no leftover carbohydrates for Trichoderma to feed on. The results have had huge economic benefits to the grower. Already the market leader in North American sales, this incre- ased production allowed us to aggressively pursue international


markets. Our sights were set on Europe! In 2011, a marketing Joint Venture was formed between Lambert Spawn and a Jan Baltussen, Eric Vernooij partnership. They have created a huge presence in Europe. The initial goal was to prove Lambert as a reliable and quality spawn for the demanding European market. Over the past five years, Lambert sales have grown steadily to the point where we are ready to make the next step…”


European plant in 2017 McIntyre is pleased to announce that all of the calculations and engineering for a European facility are completed and ready to be executed. “We are optimistic that by the middle of 2017, Europe’s most modern spawn plant will be operational. Martin Mc Court, Managing Director of Mc Don Peat Supplies talked to us before Mushroom Week on past en present of his company: “In 1976, My parents, Jim and Mary Mc Court, started suppling peat and turf sub- strates extracted from our own bogs. As a consequence of this work we were in demand to also supply mushroom casing to the mushroom industry. Our family, initially processed and sold the products on the shores of Lough Neagh, in the heat of Co. Tyrone. As the business grew, we relocated to a facility in Moy, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland. The company has grown exponentially from there over the last 23 years, and as our international markets grew, we found we needed to move premises again to keep pace with increasing market demands. In August 2015 we


relocated again to a 21st century, state of the art, purpose built mushroom casing factory. Which give us lots more space, but also easier access to motor- way and shipping ports, to better facilitate our customers. With the opening of this factory our customers have experienced the benefits of a precisely made to order and consistent product, we have space to store 4500 tonnes of peat products in a covered storage facility.
