DUTCH MUSHROOM WEEK Preview Dutch Mushroom Days

The 34rd edition of the Dutch Mushroom Days, organized in conjunction with the 19th ISMS congress in Amsterdam, is poised to start in Den Bosch. The fair traditio- nally showcases the very latest innovations for the mushroom industry, and sup- pliers display their latest offerings in some 80 booths. Here’s a - limited - preview of what you can expect at the Brabanthallen.

Sylvan, stand 75

Spawn producer Sylvan will unveil a new spawn growth medium at Mushroom Days 2016. According to a Sylvan press release, its new Mylo™ spawn carrier ‘boosts mycelium development for outstanding results’. Currently available with Sylvan’s market leading Agaricus A15 strain, the company plans to roll out Mylo across additional Agaricus strains in the near future, bringing its multiple benefits to a wide range of customers across the globe. ‘Mylo is an innovative, optimised blend of high quality nutrients and active ingre- dients that stimulate spawn incubation for rapid growth. Its superior flowability enables ease of handling for a faster and more even dispersion than traditional spawn carriers. Its small and round structure results in increased inoculation potential, which promotes uniform spawn development’. Jos Geelen (Sylvan Europe) said: “Mylo offers the perfect combination of rapid spawn growth, uniform output and an easy to handle product. It provides 25% more inoculation points compared to rye, and 25% more nutrients per litre compared to

millet, thereby delivering a stronger and more balanced compost. As with all our innovations, customers are assured of the Sylvan guarantee of high performance coupled with the industry’s most stringent quality assurance programmes.” Sylvan’s technical experts will be on hand to discuss the potential of Mylo with you in stand 75.

46 MUSHROOM BUSINESS

ISMS 2016 As Gold Sponsor, Sylvan will share some of its research and expertise in presentations and papers at ISMS 2016 by key members of the company’s R&D team. Dr Mark Wach, VP and Director of Sylvan Biosciences USA, will discuss methods for measuring oxygen uptake and respirometry of synthetic spawn products under a variety of growing conditions. ‘Directly correlating to nutrition, genetics and biology, this tool is invaluable in new product development. It provides accurate evaluation of the materials’ growth rate, enabling scientists to streamline the product development process and create an optimised solution’, says Sylvan. Also highlighted at the congress will be the evolution of marker assisted breeding in the mushroom industry. Dr Loftus, Sylvan USA, will present the current developments in modern molecular genetics and how these strategies are being used by the company to increase efficiency in new strain develop- ment. Sylvan will also contribute to the poster exhibition. Dr Rodier (Sylvan Europe) initiated a joint project with the French research institute INRA. The poster outlines a study which evaluates the usefulness of cytometric tools as a new method of selecting homokaryons of Agaricus

Spawn carrier Mylo

bisporus. Obtaining these homokaryons is essential to breeding programs and often appears as a major bottleneck for this species due to its unfavourable life cycle. The poster presents the application of the flow cytometry technology to isolate homokaryons, compares several methods and discusses the advantages and limits. Sylvan is also associated with a study to be presented at ISMS by Dutch university researchers. The company contributed to the analytical method development for mycelial biomass quantification in compost during spawn run. Dr Bonnet (Sylvan Europe), co-authored the paper on incre- ased carbohydrate degradation in compost during commercial mushroom production of Agaricus bisporus, and the results of the research will be presented at the Congress. “The ISMS Congress is an important event for the industry and Sylvan is pleased to join the scientific community to discuss the key themes in our field”, says Mark Wach. “As industry leaders, we always value the opportunity to share knowledge and discuss best practices. We look forward to meeting delegates and hearing about the new developments to facilitate further progres- sion within the industry.” More info on www.sylvaninc.com
