ISMSNEWS Bring it on!

A

n ISMS Congress usually brings the mushroom world together every four years for a highly memorable event. It has been a highly successful recipe for over half a century. But the 2016

edition will be extra special, as the very popular ISMS Congress will be held in conjunction with the industry’s biggest trade show, the Mushroom Days. These two mega events in the same week in the same geographic region will be a once in a lifetime occa- sion for our entire industry to come together to see and hear the latest and greatest research and innovation while meeting with their counterparts from all over the world. It is an opportunity that should not be missed, so make sure you register for both events! Many life-long friendships and business connec- tions have begun at an ISMS Congress and the 2016 event will provide many practical opportunities to meet and have discussions. The Congress program is choc-a-bloc with insightful keynote presen- tations, oral papers, and poster sessions. Visit the program section of the ISMS2016 website to see the vast range of topics that will be covered and the interesting papers that will be presented. Not only you get to see and hear the presentations, but you get to meet the researchers after the sessions to discuss their findings in more detail. You’ll be able to find out about all the other things they know too! With about 150 oral presentations and over 140 posters, there will be plenty on the program everyday. A highlight will be the special mar-

keting program on Monday 30 May that will feature a smorgasbord of the highest calibre speakers from around the globe. The field visits and Congress functions will compliment the scientific sessions and provide additional opportunities for networking in a relaxed and condu- cive environment. One special session that all members and Congress delegates are invited to attend is the ISMS General Assembly to be held at 19:00 on Monday night. This meeting is held only once every four or so years and is designed for delegates to hear about ISMS activities and provide feedback to the ExCom.

I look forward to welcoming all delegates to the 19th ISMS Congress in Amsterdam. It will be a unique opportunity to witness the latest and greatest but most importantly, it will be the only

place in the world that you will be able to interact with so many of your mushroom industry colleagues at one time. Please make sure you bring your brightest smile and make the effort to say hello to as many of your fellow delegates as possible. Active partici- pation will help ensure you leave The Netherlands with powerful know- ledge, new friends, and a memorable experience. Attending the 2016 ISMS Congress could well be the best investment you make this year.

CULTIVATIONTIPS ADVISIE Higher dry matter: better production and By Jos Hilkens

quality The moisture content of incubated phase III compost can fluctuate widely. Seen worldwide, moisture contents of phase III compost can vary between 56 and 69%. That is a difference of 13%! The moisture content of Dutch phase III composts is more stable, but variations of 8% still occur, with the lowest values of around 58% and the highest around 66%. A 5% difference either way in water per square metre converts to a difference of 4.5 kg dry matter per m2 in 90 kg of incubated compost. The minimum required dry matter content per m2 is about 30 kg/m2 so this makes a difference of 4.5 kg more or less dry matter, or some 15%. Dry matter is a nutrient source for mushrooms. A higher dry matter content therefore gives more constant production in the bed, and production will even increase. Mushroom quality is better, especially in the second and third flushes. What does this mean in practice? If we assume a minimum dry matter filling weight of 30 kg/m2 and a filling weight of 90 kg phase III compost/m2, things are usually fine. The dry matter content is only usually below 30 kg/m2 with extremely wet compost with a moisture content of 67% or higher. With a filling weight of 85 kg incubated compost per m2 and a moisture content of 65% or higher, not enough dry matter is filled and with a filling weight of 80 kg compost, the same applies at a moisture content of 63%. The advice is to fill 5 kg compost per m2 more if the compost is 2% wetter, and possibly fill less if the compost is drier. Production and quality will be more consistent, and results over the whole year will be better.
