DUTCH MUSHROOM WEEK BVB Substrates, stand 28
BVB Substrates ranks among the world’s major casing soil producers. The company has started using a new test facility and laboratory in recent years. Researcher Jos Amsing: “These facilities allow us to safeguard and further optimise the quality of casing soil. One of the ways we do this is a rapid test that detects whether a mushroom has been infected by wet bubble (Mycogone perniciosa). Localising the source of infection is the next step, something we will continue to develop this year in collaboration with WUR.” BVB is also studying alternatives to German casing soil peat, and ways of reducing the weight of casing soil. Amsing: “The availability of raw materials is finite and the ‘footprint’ of casing soil also has to be considered. In the test facility we measure the physical properties of the current and new casing soil recipes that cannot be measured on mushroom farms. The first steps towards alternatives for casing soil were taken some years ago. We make blends of often lighter materials, which frequently results in a product with a different structure to casing soil. Mycelium growth, spraying and cultivation trials have shown that the structure, i.e. pore volume and adhesion properties, plays a crucial role in the formation and growth of pinheads. Not all the quality tests score well enough. After many trials, we now see light ahead for a new, innovative and sustai- nable substrate.
The third project - in cooperation with Vullings - is measuring the moisture content of casing soil at loading and in the growing room. After casing, the grower has an additional tool in the form of moisture content sensors inserted in the compost and casing soil. The readings allow growers to optimise their moisture content control strategy.

Rubcoat, stand 71 Rubcoat offers a huge range of coatings.
Rubcoat B.V. in Budel has specialised for years in the conservation, protection and treatment of climate rooms that require special treatment. The company uses its own product Rubcoat, an elastic coating that is vapour and moisture-tight. These are precisely the properties required in compost tunnels, growing rooms and cold stores. Rubcoat retains its elasticity at high and low temperatures, contains no harmful substances and is mould-resistant, according to the company. Rubcoat has realised projects on the national and internati- onal markets for more than 25 years, and works as a sub-contractor for many well-known turn-key project providers. The website has more details about Rubcoat projects, see
www.rubcoat.com Director Herman Ummels: “Since 2013, Rubcoat has started to concentrate on developing and applying a coating suitable for renovation projects. This coating has identical properties, but a significantly shorter drying time (two
days) so that growing rooms and tunnels can return to production sooner. In addition, it adheres well to non-ferrous metals and PVC surfaces without requiring the use of primers. Rubcoat VP and Rubcoat VPX have been successfully used by our clients in renovation projects. Rubcoat 2K, used to renovate joints in stainless steel tunnels, is being used all over the world, to the full satisfaction of tunnel companies. Companies can apply the product themselves and the coating will last for at least 12 years.”
