The Nutcracker The House Theatre of Chicago’s modern retelling of E.T.A. Hoffman’s tale, minus ballet, casts the titular toy soldier as a reincarnation of young Clara’s recently killed soldier brother. White Christmas “Vermont should be beautiful this time of the year, all that snow.” Based on the 1954 film that starred Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney, this 2008 musical charms through and through with Irving Berlin tunes and a strong cast led by Sean Allan Krill and Matt Raftery. Joffrey Ballet: The Nutcracker The Joffrey Ballet’s annual performance of The Nutcracker, accompanied by the Chicago Philharmonic, has been a Chicago tradition since the 1980s.
