Things to Do
Your perfect weekend in… Hyde Park. By Clayton Guse
Statue of the Republic
Saturday 11am: Start the day by stuffing your gut with falafel and hummus at Nile Restaurant (1162 E 55th St; 773- 324-9499,
nilerestaurantofhydepark.com). Get there when it opens, because a swarm of U of C students will pack the place before noon. 1pm: Promontory Point (enter at E 55th St and S Shore Dr), a man-made peninsula that juts out into the lake, is a hot spot for weddings and tourists in the summer. But in the winter, you can walk it in isolation and feel like you’re in a damned Carl Sandburg poem. It also has one of the best skyline views in the city. 6pm: A10 is the name of a road that travels through Italy and France. It’s also the name of a spectacular Hyde Park restaurant that straddles the cuisines of the two countries (1462 E 53rd St; 773-288-1010,
a10hydepark.com). Make a reservation in advance for Saturday dinner, and expect to spend a good chunk of change. The burger alone is worth the hefty bill.
Friday 11am: Kick your weekend off with breakfast at Plein Air Cafe (5751 S Woodlawn Ave; 773-966-7531,
pleinaircafe.co), adjacent to the University of Chicago. Grab a croissant sandwich or the quiche of the day, and get ready to take in one of the city’s most gorgeous neighborhoods. 1pm: You can get a great taste of Chicago’s rich history at Jackson Park (6401 S Stony Island Ave), the site of the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. It’s now home to a golf course, basketball courts and a Japanese garden that will transport you to Kyoto. 5pm: At this point, it’s time to start drinking. Stop by Kimbark Beverage Shoppe (1214 E 53rd St; 773-493- 3355,
kimbarkbeverage.com), and peruse the bounty of beer and wine. Then head to Medici on 57th (1327 E 57th St; 773-667-7394,
medici57.com), BYOB and have a burger and a shake. Be sure to bring a Sharpie to contribute to the rants and messages that have been left on the restaurant’s walls and tables since the ’60s.

2 CHI-TOWN RISING A10
Mirror Maze at Museum of Science and Industry
Sunday 11am: The Museum of Science and Industry (5700 S Lake Shore Dr; 773-684-1414,
msichicago.org)—which you visited, what, 27 times as a kid?—still holds interest for grown-ups. The historic institution is home to some of the most mind-blowing exhibits in town, from robots to a simulated coal mine. 3pm: Whether or not you’re a smoker, Hyde Park Cigars (5200 S Harper Ave; 773-891-4224) can turn you into a tobacco aficionado for an afternoon. It’s BYOB, and with more than 1,500 brands of cigars and an indoor smoking lounge, it’s a great setting to float off into a hazy, whiskey-ridden oblivion. 6pm: Still standing? Then get a load of the Chicago blues at the new Checkerboard Lounge (5201 S Harper Ct; 773-684-1472). Forced out of its former Bronzeville location, the swanky spot has a great rotation of jazz, blues and R&B acts that will bring a smooth close to your weekend.
