WEEKEND IN Asheville, NC

FOR A SOUTHERN escape, you can reach this Blue Ridge Mountains spot within two hours by plane. And while most people know it for the Biltmore Estate, it’s not why we love to go—we’re here to eat and drink. Asheville is a small city (87,000

people) with stellar amenities and supercool local businesses (see Malaprop’s Bookstore and Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar). And did we mention downtown is in a valley surrounded by mountains? But let’s start with beer. Make

your own brewery crawl with Wicked Weed Brewing (91 Biltmore Ave; 828-575-9599, wickedweedbrewing.com), Green Man Brewery (27 Buxton Ave; 828-252-5502, greenmanbrewery.com) and Hi-Wire Brewing (197 Hilliard Ave; 828-738-2448, hiwirebrewing.com) downtown, in addition to big names like Sierra Nevada’s East Coast outpost (100 Sierra Nevada Way, Mills River, NC; 828-708-6176, sierranevada.com). End with a Belgian in the basement of the city’s best beer bar, Thirsty Monk (92 Patton Ave; 828-254-5470, monkpub.com). But you also have to eat. On

Sundays, Rhubarb (7 S Pack Sq; 828-785-1503, rhubarbasheville .com) serves a family-style, three- course supper. For something a bit funkier, try the Admiral (400 Haywood Rd; 828-252-2541, theadmiralnc.com). The menu is always changing (boar ribs? crispy tofu?), and the place turns into a dance party on Friday and Saturday nights.  Laura Rote

a stop at Trader Sam’s (1150 Magic Way, Anaheim, CA; 714-781-2463) for a tiki drink (and the kitsch factor) that rivals Chicago’s Lost Lake. What’s a visit to L.A. without time on the

L.A. IS SO much more than Hollywood glam and perfect weather (though the weather is pretty spectacular). First stop: an overview of this sprawling city (literally, the view stretches from the mountains to the sea) from Griffith Observatory (2800 E Observatory Rd; 213-473-0800, griffithobservatory.org). It’s a gorgeous Art Deco observatory in the hills of Griffith Park (4730 Crystal Springs Dr; 323-913-4688), with 4,000 verdant acres of trails (look for the iconic Hollywood sign!). You’d be remiss not to spend a day at Disneyland (1313 Disneyland Dr, Anaheim, CA; 877-560-6477, disneyland.disneygo .com)—and to really experience the magic, we do recommend a whole day. Don’t forget

beach? You have plenty of options, from people-watching at Muscle Beach in Venice (1800 Ocean Front Walk) to picture-perfect sunsets at El Matador State Beach (32350 El Matador Beach Rd), one of the coast’s prettiest stretches of sand. Take a leisurely drive up the Pacific Coast Highway for lunch at Malibu Seafood (25653 Pacific Coast Hwy; 310-456-3430, malibuseafood.com), a shack that overlooks the water and churns out fresh favorites like fish-and-chips and mahi- mahi tacos. End your week exploring the burgeoning Eastside. Grab brunch in Atwater at Dune (3143 Glendale Blvd; 323-486-7073, dune.kitchen), a purveyor of incredible, casual Mediterranean sandwiches. Head to Highland Park to peruse records at Wombleton (5123 York Blvd; 213-422- 0069, wombletonrecords.com) and build your own doughnut (pick your base, filling and topping) at Donut Friend (5107 York Blvd; 213-995-6191, donutfriend.com). Or shop and drink in downtown’s Arts District, home to four breweries and four craft distilleries. For dinner, Grand Central Market (317 S Broadway; 213-624-2378, grandcentralmarket.com) has a smorgasbord of stalls. Squeeze into a booth at the Varnish (118 E 6th St; 213-265-7089)—hidden inside the historic French-dip sandwich joint Cole’s (since 1908!)—to toast your trip and start planning your return. Kate Wertheimer
