Take the kids, hop on a hayride, and see who can make it out first at one of these corn mazes near Chicago. By Laura Rote

YOU MIGHT NOT realize it, but truly, no two corn mazes are alike. Just consider this handful of offerings, from a spooky nighttime challenge to a Trekkie- approved journey through towering stalks. No matter what kind of autumn outing your family wants, these farms around Chicago offer plenty of adventure and activity.

County Line Orchard This quaint, sprawling farmland

is an hour’s drive from Chicago, but you’ll find plenty to do when you arrive, from petting the pygmy goats to listening to a barnyard jam. Besides picking apples and buying to-die-for fresh doughnuts while you’re

in Indiana, you may also want to make time for a tractor ride out to the corn maze (it typically features a Chicago sports team design—go Hawks!). For $7, you get an “explorer pass,” which includes access to the maze, tractor rides, the picnic area and apple trees you can pick from. Children ages 2 and under are free. 

out for ghosts and goblins. For the scare-averse (and those younger than 12), you can still have fun at the flashlight maze— it’s more puzzle than panic. End the day with a moonlight hayride. The maze is open select dates in September and October from 7 to 11pm. You can do the haunted maze, flashlight maze and moonlight hayride— all for $17. 
