SEPTEMBER In the Heights


Just in time for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton to arrive in the city, Porchlight Music Theatre mounts his earlier Tony-winning musical about close-knit residents of Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood, with a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Quiara Alegría Hudes.  Stage 773, 1225 W Belmont Ave (773-327- 5252, porchlightmusictheatre.org). Grizzly Mama


Intentionally timed to coincide with the U.S. election, George Brant’s comedy, staged by Rivendell, is about a mother who becomes determined to stop a Sarah Palin–esque presidential candidate by any means necessary.

The City of Conversation Marti Lyons directs Anthony

Man in the Ring Kamal Angelo Bolden stars in


a world premiere by Michael Cristofer, whose play The Shadow Box won a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize in 1977. The subject is the boxer Emile Griffith, who beat opponent Benny Paret to death in a 1962 match after Paret taunted him with a gay slur; Griffith came out as bisexual decades later and died in 2013.  Court Theatre, 5535 S Ellis Ave


Helldrivers of Daytona Just your typical musical


farce about 1960s NASCAR drivers with music by the lead guitarist of the Knack (“My Sharona”). Visiting Edna Tony winner Debra Monk plays


the title role of a woman with cancer who is visited by her adult son in this world premiere
