When did you open Rootstock? We opened May 18, 2009. It was terrifying. The economy had just taken a turn for the worse. We couldn’t get a loan from any kind of establishment, so we pulled together our personal savings and begged and borrowed from friends.


How has the area around Rootstock changed? Seven years ago, there were a couple of local businesses nearby that were successful, but there were a lot of foreclosed properties up and down California Avenue. There weren’t nearly 


How do you see Humboldt Park changing over the next decade? I think it’s going to be as dense as Wicker Park or Bucktown, especially because the park is such a pivotal part of why people want to live here. But as long as small businesses stay strong, the neighborhood won’t change like Wicker Park did. It would   Clayton Guse
